SN instructed the patient that complete smoking cessation is the most important intervention to prevent COPD exacerbations and slow disease progression. The patient was educated on the importance of taking all prescribed COPD medications as directed, using inhalers with proper technique, and not delaying the use of rescue medications until symptoms worsen.
SN advised the patient to avoid respiratory irritants, including tobacco smoke, strong fumes, dust, and exposure to extreme temperatures. The patient was also instructed to practice deep breathing exercises, maintain adequate hydration, and balance activity with rest to help reduce shortness of breath.
The patient and primary caregiver were instructed to notify the primary care provider if the patient experiences worsening shortness of breath, increased sputum production, changes in sputum color, fever, chest pain, or decreased oxygen saturation. Patient and caregiver verbalized understanding.
