Skilled nurse instructed the patient and caregiver that chest discomfort associated with uncontrolled hypertension may be described as pressure, tightness, or heaviness and may radiate to the arm, jaw, or back. Patient and caregiver were educated that musculoskeletal pain typically increases with movement or palpation and improves with rest or position changes.
Skilled nurse educated the patient and caregiver on monitoring for warning signs requiring immediate medical attention, including persistent or severe chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or diaphoresis. Patient and caregiver were instructed to call 911 or seek emergency medical care if chest pain does not resolve with rest or prescribed medications.
Skilled nurse reinforced the importance of limiting exertion as tolerated, adhering to the prescribed antihypertensive medication regimen, and promptly reporting any new or worsening symptoms to the primary care provider. Patient and caregiver verbalized understanding of the education provided.
